【問題】以下の英文は"Fullmetal Alchemist, Vol. 1"中からの引用です。
日本語版の『鋼の錬金術師（1）』を読んだことがある人は、
どこのセリフか考えてみてね。

皆さん、いくつかわかったでしょうか？シーンをイメージできました？
では、以下で答え合わせ。


1） "In other words, the basic of alchemy is the "equivalent exchange"."

（"Fullmetal Alchemist, Vol. 1" p. 26より引用）
「つまり錬金術の基本は「等価交換」！」

ハガレン通しての重要概念である「等価交換」は"equivalent exchange"と訳されてました。
まぁ、直訳ですよね。


2） "So you deserve the title of state alchemist after all!"


（"Fullmetal Alchemist, Vol. 1" p. 49より引用）
　「国家錬金術師の名は伊達ではないということか！」

Deserve（～に値する）なんかは覚えておきたい語彙。
After allで強調してるところも英語っぽいなぁ。


3） "This is what happens to sinners who trespass in God's domain!"

（"Fullmetal Alchemist, Vol. 1" p. 54より引用）
　「神様とやらの領域を犯した咎人の姿だ！！」

This is what...は英語っぽい表現なので自分でも使ってみたい。
他にもsinner（罪人）、trespass（侵入する）、domain（領域）などは押さえたい語彙。


4） "'scuse us."

（"Fullmetal Alchemist, Vol. 1" p. 73より引用）
　「はい邪魔ー」

'scuseはExcuseの略のよう。Excuse me（ちょっとすみません）の複数形ね。
何気ない英語表現も勉強になるなぁ。


5） "The thing we brought back wasn't even human any more."

（"Fullmetal Alchemist, Vol. 1" p. 75より引用）
　「人の形をしていなかった」

Bring backも簡単な表現だけど、使えるようにイメージで覚えよう。副詞難しい。
Not even...any moreも完全に否定しているイメージ。強烈な表現。


6） "You need to figure that out on your own."

（"Fullmetal Alchemist, Vol. 1" p. 91より引用）
　「そんなこと自分で考えろ」

Figure...outの目的語が間に入るの間違いがち。注意しよう。
ちょっと日本語版より優し目の表現なのかな？


7） "You know it's forbidden by the state alchemy laws to make gold!"

（"Fullmetal Alchemist, Vol. 1" p. 104より引用）
　「金の錬成は国家錬金法で禁止されてるでしょ！」

Forbiddenはforbid（～を禁じる）の過去分詞。覚えよう。
by...が動詞とto不定詞の間に入るのかー。後ろに置くのとニュアンスが違うのかなぁ。


8） "Are you really going to abandon those people…?"

（"Fullmetal Alchemist, Vol. 1" p. 127より引用）
　「本当にあの人達放っておく気…」

Abandon（～を見捨てる）も覚えておきたい語彙。
あと、ここではbe going toを使っている。Willとの使い分け重要。


9） "I'll be sure to tell the higher-ups about your corruption and incompetence too."

（"Fullmetal Alchemist, Vol. 1" p. 139より引用）
　「中尉の無能っぷりは上の方にきちんと話を通しときますんで」

Higher-up（上司）やcorruption（汚職）、incompetence（無能）なんかが覚えたい語彙。
Be sure toのニュアンスも掴んでおきたいところ。


10） "The fullmetal alchmist is onboard."

（"Fullmetal Alchemist, Vol. 1" p. 146より引用）
　「鋼の錬金術師が乗っている」

Onboardはon board（機内で）の短縮。
何気ない表現だけど、boardのイメージ把握重要。


11） "Next time the hole won't be so little."

（"Fullmetal Alchemist, Vol. 1" p. 158より引用）
　「次は尻の穴増やすぞ」

1巻の中で唯一、日本語版から表現が完全に変わっていた部分。
直訳は「次の穴は小さくねぇぞ」かな。尻の穴は禁止ワードみたい。


12） "I wouldn't have helped out if I knew it was in your district!"

（"Fullmetal Alchemist, Vol. 1" p. 175より引用）
　「大佐の管轄なら放っときゃよかった！！」

仮定法過去だ！懐かしい！高校英語も役に立つなぁ。
District（地区）は覚えておきたい語句。


13） "In volume 2 we will be switching protagonists and the series will be retitled "flame alchemist."" 

（"Fullmetal Alchemist, Vol. 1" p. 181より引用）
　「2巻からは主役交代で『焔の錬金術師』が始まります。」 

Protagonist（主役）という語句は覚えておこう。
しかし、おまけページの細かいところまで丁寧に翻訳してあって頭が下がる。

一度日本語で読んだことある作品だと、
翻訳版を精読しなくても何となく意味がわかっちゃうんだけど、
ピックアップしていくと色々な表現が使われていて勉強になる。
時間はかかるけどこれからもしっかり精読していこう。


次回の『英訳漫画紹介』のレビュー作品は未定。
更新は多分、1か月後。習慣にしていって英語力向上させたい。
